Q. How do I get help on the search engine for volunteering opportunities?
A. Go to search help
Q. What do I do if a volunteering opportunity description, web site or email address is outdated or not working?
A. Email smile@smilestruck.com
Q. Can I add a volunteering opportunity listing not listed on the site, even if its not my organization or opportunity listing?
A. Yes, volunteers rely on volunteers keeping our database of listings as complete and up to date as possible. Please go to the Add an Opportunity page. But remember, our system will require that the organization contact's email address recipient authenticate by replying to an auto-generated email to verify that the information submitted on our web site is correct.
Q. Do I need to login to use your web site?
A. As of right now, we don't require logins to use our search engine. However, we encourage you to create a Login Account as it allows you to track your inquiries, receive email alerts every time a new organization that meets your preferences is added, upload a volunteering resume that you can choose to send as soon as you find the right volunteering opportunity and much more!.
Q. I have no health care training at all! Can I still find a place to volunteer in health care?
A. Absolutely! Simply go to our search page and under health care function or specialty choose "All Types of Trainable Volunteers". You could volunteer as a librarian in a hospital library to providing clinical assistance in a foreign country. The opportunities are endless even for people without any health care or clinical experience
Q. What is a Trainable Volunteer?
A. A trainable volunteer is any volunteer with an interest in health care volunteering. She or he may have knowledge of health care or none at all. However, most trainable volunteers have no professional training in a specific health care function. If you are somebody interested in volunteering in health care and making a difference, please choose this option in our search engine. Types of opportunities for trainable volunteers may range from being a medical escort for the elderly at your local community hospital, to a helicopter pilot who distributes medical supplies to remote areas, to running in a local 5k run/walk to raise money for cardiac disease, to working as a patient assistant in a foreign country. The opportunities are endless. Everyone has the ability to help the health care system in some way, so choose from the thousands of opportunities!
Q. Why should I bother signing up for a volunteering account?
A. Signing up for a free account allows you to:
- Search for listings
- View email addresses of all dental providers you are interested in
- Make inquiries and send messages directly through our system to dental providers
- Track your search history and receive product announcements
- Best of all, it is 100% free just like all our services.
Q. If you are a non-profit, why is it smilestruck.com?
A. The truth is that we own the rights to smilestruck.com, HealthCareVolunteer.org and HealthCareVolunteer.net. You can access our site by whatever web site address you wish. We chose to use the .com address since it is the most commonly and well-known extension on the Internet
Q. Why didn't I receive my account activation email?
A. Occasionally, emails get lost in the Internet and so you may wish to try and login with your account information and our system will automatically resend the activation email. If this does not work, please send us email to smile@smilestruck.com with Subject: "Please activate my account" and we will activate your account within 12 hours for you.
Q. I'm interested in becoming a volunteer. I will be licensed as a pharmacist this coming May. Want to know what I can do to help?
A. Please sign up on our web site. Once you are on our web site create a Volunteer account. Then sign in to your account and fill out our online volunteering application from the main menu on the account login page. We’ll then try and place you with a volunteer position in one of our host countries. Alternatively, you can search our listing for volunteering positions.
Q. I am a foreign trained dentist from Argentina, currently living in Miami, taking the NBDE and willing to get into dental school in the US.I would like to know if you could tell me if there is any kind of dental program in which I could volunteer?
A. You may be able to volunteer outside of the United States in one of our programs. In terms of volunteering in the U.S. you will find the best luck in a dental school or in a dental office as an assistant until you get your license in the United States. If you want to apply for our programs abroad: Go to our site and then click "Volunteers" and then sign up for an account. Once you login to your new account you can sign up by filling out the application online. Certain developing countries will take foreign dental/medical, etc. licenses from volunteers who come from abroad to volunteer. Countries choose on a case by case basis, so it is best to apply and allow us to present your application to the country's governing health body.
Q. I am very interested in attending the clinical elective abroad for one or
two months. Is it in general possible to attend the clinical elective as foreign
student?
A. Yes, this is possible. In some instances, you will be able to fulfill your clinical elective requirements as long as your university allows you to volunteer as such.
Q. I am a dental or medical student. Will I be allowed to treat patient by myself?
A. You will be able to treat patients according to your current level of clinical training from your home institution. Most developing countries will allow you to perform patient care. The main objective is to provide competent clinical care at all times even when performing volunteer work. We will tell you specifically if you will not be able to provide clinical care, otherwise assume you can perform clinical care. 1st and 2nd year medical/dental students will get less clinical experience as their scope is limited. 3rd/4th/5th/6th year students will have extended clinical experiences, but most of the decision is based independently on clinical competency of the student.
Q. Is there a program fee / registration fee for your direct patient programs?
A. No. Our founding principle is connecting volunteers to volunteering opportunities for free.
Q. Usually how many volunteers are there during a single time at any one location during your direct patient care programs?
A. The number of volunteers varies per site, but typically we try to have enough volunteers on site so that everyone has enough volunteer work for a full 8-hour day of volunteer work. We try to limit volunteers so that everyone is adequately busy. Typically, our program is led with at least one physician or dentist and support personnel as needed. In certain cases nurse practioners can lead their own groups by providing preventive healthcare.
Q. It seems that most organisations require a very high level of
training. Are there voluntary postitions that require medical graduates that have only completed one or two years of hospital training?
A. It really depends on your individual training. Yes, there are voluntary positions that will accept new medical graduates, but rarely are positions created specifically for these types of people. If you have clinical experience you can treat within your training. You will learn new clinical information at the volunteer site, but it may not be as advanced as your home country. Nonetheless, some people take 1 year off to volunteer abroad to get more public health experience as the cases you see are more varied than in developed countries. If you are interested please create an account and fill out the online application.
